"Brominated flame retardants".
Rarely has there been so much discussion about a group
of chemical products. In the 1990's various allegations
were being made about brominated flame retardants (BFRs)
and bromine in general. The producers of bromine were
concerned to investigate the key issues, believing in some
cases that concerns were valid and action needed to be taken
and in some cases that allegations were overblown for political
reasons. BSEF’s remit is to ensure that the best available
scientific information is used when addressing these issues.
Therefore the producers of bromine worldwide
established BSEF in 1997. BSEF members are Albemarle Corporation,
ICL Industrial Products, Chemtura and Tosoh Corporation.
BSEF receives funding from its members each year to commission
scientific research on the key issues at stake with regard
to BFRs and bromine. BSEF has full-time scientists who evaluate
research. Additionally research is commissioned from independent
scientists and scientific institutes. |

Brominated flame retardants save lives by preventing
and limiting fires. It is important that any environmental
concerns are addressed, so that the life safety benefits
of these products can be maintained, without damage
to the environment.
BSEF has two key roles: |
 |
|
|
 |
|
to commission science on BFRs
and bromine
to inform decision-makers
on the results of this science, and to
represent the bromine
industry on issues of environment and human
health
Also,
our website aims to inform all audiences with a
stake in fire safety and chemicals
that make our everyday life modern products
safer. We have a strong commitment to being a leading
source of research and information to consumers of
products containing bromine and brominated flame
retardants, to customers including the electrical and
electronic
equipment, furniture and construction industries,
and to regulators around the world who need to make
informed
decisions.
