The bromine industry

At the time of the creation of BSEF, in 1997, the international distribution of bromine production was as follows:

In recent years, the United State's portion of world production has decreased considerably as Israel has strengthened its position as the world largest producers of elemental bromine.

Overall three companies account for around 78% of the world production (Source: USGS Minerals Information 2003). As regards bromine world resources, they are believed to be virtually unlimited. Notably the Dead Sea in the Middle East contains over 1 billion tons of bromine and the seawater contains an estimated 100 trillion tons.

 

The Brominated Flame Retardant industry

By far the most important market for bromine is the production of brominated flame retardants (BFRs).
