Sweden advised against flame retardants' ban, Environment Daily 2069, 29/03/06

Thursday 30 March 2006
Swedish chemicals agency Kemi has warned of "severe practical and economic consequences" if the government prohibits the brominated flame retardants HCBCDD and TBBPA (ED 10/11/05). A unilateral ban on TBBPA, for example, would stop most imports of electronic goods but fail to deliver health or environmental benefits, Kemi said. In an assessment of the plan, the agency said Sweden should instead wait for the outcome of ongoing EU risk assessments of the chemicals, one of which is being coordinated by Sweden.
