ICIS Chemical Business, 09/10.2006 - EBFRIP responds to WWF report

Tuesday 10 October 2006
The European Brominated Flame Retardant Industry Panel (EBFRIP) has hit back at a WWF study reporting the presence of man-made chemicals, including brominated flame retardants, in food (ICIS Chemical Business, 2-8 October). The EBFRIP said that the report's findings only concerned constituents of the flame retardant penta-BDE, which was banned in Europe in 2004. In addition, the levels at which the substances were found did not present a risk to health. The EBFRIP said: "The presence of penta-BDE in food is most probably related to its incidence in the environment. Scientific evidence indicates that levels of penta-BDE's components in Europe's environment are falling."(...)
