Deca-BDE

Deca-BDE remains available for most uses in the US; no federal action has been taken to limit or restrict the use of Deca-BDE. While numerous pieces of state legislation seeking to restrict or prohibit its use have been introduced in the last 5 years, 68 have failed to pass, been withdrawn, or amended to remove Deca-BDE, and only four limited bills have passed in Maine, Oregon, Vermont and Washington.  Those bills still allow many major uses of Deca-BDE, and prohibit a select few current or potential future uses.  A few states also have on-going studies monitoring the use of Deca-BDE and related actions in other jurisdictions.

Most recently, the Government of Canada concluded that a severe limitation on the use of DecaBDE in electrical and electronic equipment was the most prudent and justifiable course of action for Canada.  BSEF does not believe an effective prohibition on the use of DecaBDE in electrical and electronic equipment is necessary or warranted and is continuing to work closely with Environment Canada on measures to effectively monitor and reduce emissions of cDecaBDE into the environment.
